Print SC gives Punjab government 24 hours to hospitalise farmer leader Jagjit Dallewal
An “anxious” Supreme Court gave the Punjab government 24 hours to act on medical advice to hospitalise farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, whose indefinite fast is posing a danger to his life.
Mr. Dallewal has been on a hunger strike at the Khanauri border since November 26 to press the Centre to accept the agitating farmers’ demands, including a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for crops.
Appearing before a Vacation Bench of Justices Surya Kant and Sudhanshu Dhulia, the Punjab government said its efforts to move Mr. Dallewal to a hospital was met with stiff resistance.
State Advocate General Gurminder Singh informed that a delegation of eight Cabinet Ministers had made no progress in convincing him to go to a hospital. The farmer leader had made it clear that he would not budge until the Centre opened a dialogue with the farmers.
The State warned that forcibly shifting him to a hospital may trigger “physical jostling” with farmers at the protest site, which may prove extremely risky for the septuagenarian leader. As of now, he was getting medical attention at the protest camp.
