Udupi : Bro. Gilbert Gabriel D’Silva, one of the great philanthropists and social worker passed away on Monday, December 5, after suffering from a brief illness at the age of 76.

Bro. Gilbert D’Silva was a greatly recognized and influential person in various social and religious activities. He was responsible for the growth of St. Anthony’s Shrine at Kerekatte near Siddapur of Kundapura taluk. He was a great devotee of St. Anthony of Padua and used to take the devotees of St Anthony’s Shrine at Kerekatte by arrangement of vehicles and after the return from Kerekatte, he used to offer lunch meal to all the devotees returning from feast on June 13 at his house in Matpady near Brahmavar every year. He was an entrepreneur who owned a famous St Anthony Press at Brahmavar. One of his habits is that those who visit his press, he used to dine them in the nearby restaurant without thinking of religion and caste.

He was actively involved in St Vincent de Paul Society and responsible for taking care of plenty of poor people including providing shelter and food. He was a right handed donor for not only Christians but non-Christians also. He used to never miss weekly parish level meetings of St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Meanwhile, he was also actively involved in Catholic Sabha at parish level and deanery level. He was the president of Catholic Sabha unit of the Brahmavar parish as well as he was president of Catholic Sabha Kallianpur Deanery unit. He also used to attend Catholic Sabha Mangalore Pradesh monthly meetings at Bishop’s House, Mangalore.

He also served as director of Cooperative Societies in Brahmavar, active member in Holy Family Church parish pastoral council, Brahmavar and also member of other known social organizations. He was a devoted Roman Catholic Christian with attending daily masses and other religious related occasions.

He left behind his wife Stalla, Children Smitha, Sowmya and Praveen, relatives and a large number of friends.
