Police reforms report to usher in major changes in state : Bommai

KARKALA: Karnataka state police will see a slew of changes in its administration as well as efficiency once the director-general of police Praveen Sood submits the police reforms report to the home department.
The government is expecting this report by March 31, said home minister Basavaraj Bommai. The accent will be on police friendly policing and ushering in a new culture in the way police function and meets aspirations of society, he said.
Inaugurating the newly built 48-police quarters under Police Gruha 2020 here on Saturday, Bommai said the report is expected to pave the way for an attitudinal change in the manner in which the department functions. Help desks will be norms at police stations with police focussing on total crime control in a free and transparent manner. Facilities to police personnel and their family will also be an area that the reforms report will touch on, he said.
On the operational aspect, Bommai said the state police’s war on drugs has seen police seize the amount of drugs in the last 10-months that it had seized in the last decade. Synthetic drugs, foreign drugs and players, drugs, arms and ammunition sold on the dark web are now fair target for state police, he said, lauding the efficiency that the men in khaki had shown in this war. Foreigners dealing with drugs too are being hemmed in using special laws.
On the use of social media to foment social unrest, Bommai said police will treat such attempts as acts of treason and deal with the perpetrators with an iron hand. The warning comes close on the heels of his direction to Mangaluru City Police to book a case against a leader of a political outfit for his statement urging people not to donate to Ram Temple. No such attempts that create social religious divides will be tolerated, he noted.
Police recruitment going on at full pace will see Karnataka State Police add 16000 police personnel to its ranks in the next three-years. The state cabinet has approved a 2% reservation for sports persons in police ranks to go with 25% reservation for women, he said. CEN police stations will be set up in all policing units. Integrated FSL labs will be set at regional levels to augment policing efforts in tackling different types of crime including cybercrime.
The home minister also assured to look into a demand by Karkala MLA V Sunil Kumar to set up a fire station for the newly formed Hebri taluk as per norms, while agreeing to include the proposal for a new police station building for Hebri in the forthcoming state budget. He also lauded the resolve shown by the local MLA in giving impetus to development works in the taluk and striving to bring most government schemes to the taluk.
