Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada district does not boast an enviable record in terms of its success rate in civil services’ examinations - both the union public service commission (UPSC) and the Karnataka public service commission (KPSC) examinations. The few who have managed to make a mark in these highly competitive examinations have done so largely as a result of individual efforts, and not because of a systematic push that provides a fillip to youths in the region to write these examinations. The success of Yatish Ullal and Ajith M Rai in the KPSC examinations served to bring this fact to the fore yet again.

 Additional deputy commissioner for Dakshina Kannada, Kumar, a 2005 batch KAS officer, a native of Hassan pointed out that, unlike the old Mysuru region, awareness among youth of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi regarding these competitive examinations was less. "They opt for professional and management careers, as can be seen from the large number of doctors, engineers and business executives from this part of the state," said Kumar, who has also served as additional DC of Udupi.

 "In Udupi, the district administration organized orientation camps for youngsters to motivate them to take up these examinations. On a personal level, I help those who come to me seeking guidance in this regard or refer them to those who have cleared these examinations in recent years," Kumar added.

 Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner KG Jagadeesha said that there were no immediate plans by the district administration to set up a formal establishment to coach or guide competitive examination aspirants. "But I will help those seeking guidance in my personal capacity," said. At public functions, Jagadeehsa refers to the knowledge and experience he gained during his probationary and training periods. "The training period reignited my interest in sports," he said.
