Print A roadside Pieta shrine attached to the Holy Cross parish church in the Anglo Indian enclave of Tangasseri in Kollam city was found desecrated by vandals early on Tuesday morning by people who were going to attend the morning holy mass. The shrine was constructed during the colonial period.
Hand written posters in Malayalam and English were pasted inside the shrine. One of the posters read that the Bishop Jerome Nagar commercial complex, a shopping mall of the Kollam diocese, would be attacked with bombs. Other posters contained derogatory language against clergy. Computer printouts containing messages and photos of Mata Amritanandamayi were pasted on the walls of the shrine. Tension erupted at Tangasseri when the news about it spread and hundreds of people from all sections began arriving there to register their protests. A strong police posse was deployed in front of the shrine by 7.30 a.m. Protesters blocked the Tangasseri arch, the entry point into the enclave and declared a hartal. Shops, commercial establishments, and branches of two banks in the enclave remained closed.
