BANGALORE: Some got tickets, most got lathis. This was the experience of cricket fans who queued up for tickets at Chinnaswamy Stadium on Thursday.

Obviously, tickets were scarce on opening day. Cricketer lovers were angry a fraction of the tickets were put on sale out of a total of 38,000, the stadium’s capacity. But KSCA secretary Javagal Srinath said around 7,500 tickets went on sale at the counters.

Cricket fans reckon 7,500 is too high a number, it does not explain the chaos that erupted at ticket booths. Delve into the quotas (the reserved tickets) and you’ll find that 11,000 tickets should have been on offer for the general public.

Here’s how: 10,000 tickets were kept aside for people who had bought tickets online when the match was scheduled to be held in Kolkata, but only 3,800 picked them up. Some 8,000 passes were provided to club members, the ICC, the BCCI, former players, umpires, scorers, government officials. Around 3,000 tickets were sold to members, 4,000 to cricket playing clubs, 2,500 tickets to ICC’s sponsors and partners, and 700 to other state associations.

That makes 22,000 in passes and tickets, leaving 16,000 in the balance. Now account for 5,000 seats for KSCAs corporate commitments, leaving a final tally of approximately 11,000. But just what happened to these tickets?

"Some more tickets are expected to be available online," Srinath said, "We are getting back some tickets from ICC and others and those will be sold online."
