MIA seized 1kg gold hid behind flight toilet mirror

Print MANGALORE: Customs officers of Mangalore International Airport on Sunday morning seized 1.16kg of gold concealed in the toilet mirror of a Dubai-Mangalore flight.
MIA deputy commissioner of customs (airport) Krishna Kumar Prasad said the gold was found concealed in two packets wrapped in black tapes and stuck behind the mirror of the rear toilet of a Jet Airways flight.
He said the officials, acting on a tipoff, rummaged through the flight and ripped open the mirror to discover the hidden bars. Each of the two packets contained five gold bars.
This is the second major seizure of gold weighing 1kg or more at MIA in the past one week, underlining the desperate - and, often, ingenious - methods employed by India-bound flyers to smuggle in the yellow metal at any cost. Sources said the Dubai-Mangalore flight is often chosen to smuggle in gold as the aircraft later leaves for Mumbai in a domestic leg of its journey.
The person who arrived from Dubai could have hidden the gold bars there and disembarked at Mangalore, possibly to be picked up by a conduit taking the same flight to Mumbai. There are no stringent checks for disembarking domestic passengers.
Sources said the department was well aware of the subtle changes in the modus operandi that gold couriers employ. Earlier, gold bars used to be fastened under flight seats or dumped in trash bins to be picked up by conduits.
Now, they are turning gold bars into refined foils stuck to cardboards of toy boxes or stuck behind flight toilet mirrors, they added. The smugglers are outsmarted by vigilant officials.
