Bangalore boy to build roads from plastic waste

Bangalore: The problem of plastic waste in the city is getting acute by the day. Bangalore generates roughly 5,000 tonne of solid waste daily, of which nearly 50 tonne is plastic. But there is a ray of hope as an M Tech student has taken it upon himself to find ways of countering the menace. A N Ashwin, a student of R V Engineering College, is conducting a study, titled ’Effects of Waste Plastic Utilisation on the Performance of Semi-Dense Bituminous Concrete Mixes’, which will look at ways to put plastics to good use. The study is a first-of-its-kind in India. Every day, tonnes of plastic is generated, and not properly disposed - its either dumped along with other waste generated or is being burnt, causing a serious threat to the environment.

Hero Group CFO arrested in Citibank fraud case

Gurgaon: Hero Group CFO Sanjay Gupta has been arrested by Gurgaon police in the multi-crore Citibank fraud case. Sources told CNN-IBN that Gupta recommended Citibak employee Shivraj Puri to other people in the Hero Group in return for a commission of about Rs 20 crore from him.He has been sent to police custody for five days. Gupta was also aware of the fact that Puri used to present fake Securities and Exchange Board of India circulars while making the transaction.They are not ruling out the involvement of other top officials of the company in the fraud and claim that Puri used to keep in touch with Gupta on regular basis. Police suspect that employees of other banks and companies may also be involved in the nearly Rs 300 crore fraud case masterminded by Puri.

Workers strike in Dubai after labor camp riot

DUBAI - Workers at a Dubai labor camp are staging a rare strike after a melee with security guards. A company official overseeing the workers says the riot broke out late Saturday after long-standing allegations of mistreatment by the guards. The official from Jams HR Solutions describes the damage as "huge" with at least 40 buses destroyed and furniture and windows smashed.

Strong 6.5 magnitude quake hits Chile, no injuries

SANTIAGO, Jan 2 (Reuters) - A strong 6.5 magnitude earthquake hit central Chile on Sunday but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, local emergency officials said. The quake, which the U.S. Geological Survey reported as 7.1 magnitude, struck the town of Tirua almost 70 km (44 miles)northwest of Temuco, the director of the country’s Onemi emergency office said.

Bitter chill in north India leaves 30 dead

New Delhi: An intense cold wave has gripped northern India, claiming more than thirty lives already.Five more deaths were reported across Uttar Pradesh as the mercury dipped due to rains at some places. While a 70-year-old man and a two-year-old boy died in Bahraich and Farukkhabad districts respectively, one death each was reported from Sitapur, Mahoba and Chitrakoot in the last 24 hours. Etawah was the coldest at 6.1 degrees, Lucknow was warmer at 8. Uttaranchal’s capital Dehradun recorded a low of 6 degrees. Delhi experienced its coldest day of the season as it went below 15 degrees for the first time this winter.

India to get key UNSC role in fighting terror

Washington: India, which has joined the UN Security Council after a of gap of 19 years, is most likely to be given a key responsibility by this powerful 15-membered body in fight against terrorism; thus acknowledging New Delhi’s prominent role in the global war against terror. Diplomatic sources privy to the discussions at the United Nations headquarters in New York told talks are in advance stage to request India to head one of its two key counter-terrorism committees. Ahead of its joining the Security Council on January 1, in its informal consultations with its other key members, India had made its intentions clear that it wants to make the fight against terrorism a priority area during its two-year term as the non-permanent member of the council.
