China throws its hat in the ring on dispute over two Koreas

BEIJING: China has thrown its hat in the ring after the two Koreas exchanged artillery fire last Tuesday, and the United States made it clear it was going to stick to its old allay, South Korea. The Chinese foreign ministry on Friday objected to a move by Washington to participate in a joint military exercise with South Korea from November 28, which is seen as a measure to deter North Korea.

Fresh Lokayukta-Govt collision in Karnataka over land scam probe

Lokayukta Santosh Hegde today objected to the State government’s decision to order a judicial probe into land scam allegation faced by Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and said he will complete the pending inquiry into a complaint on the same issue. India record their best-ever performance in Asian Games

GUANGZHOU: India created history by recording their best-ever performance in Asian Games with 64 medals, including 14 gold, with star boxer Vijender Singh providing the icing on the cake by bringing the last yellow metal on the penultimate day on Friday. The men’s and women’s kabaddi teams expectedly maintained their supremacy by clinching the gold before the women’s 4x400m quartet and Vijender (75kg) bagged a yellow metal each on the most productive day for India in the mega-event.

Number of world’s poorest countries doubled since 1970s: UN

The number of very poor countries has doubled in the last 30 to 40 years, while the number of people living in extreme poverty has also grown two-fold, a UN think-tank has warned. In its annual report on the 49 least developed countries (LDCs) in the world, the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) said that the model of development that has prevailed to date for these countries has failed and should be re-assessed.

Britain’s queen makes first visit to UAE in 31 years

ABU DHABI — Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip arrived in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, 31 years after their first visit to the oil-rich United Arab Emirates, the state news agency WAM reported.“During the visit Her Majesty will attend the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and pay her respects at the tomb of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahayan,” the UAE founding ruler who died in 2004, the British embassy said. She was hosted by Sheikh Zayed on her first visit in 1979, and was invited this time by his son and UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan.
