Karnataka to bear training expense of London Olympics-bound athletes

Karnataka government today honoured top international sportspersons from the state with cash incentives and said it is ready to foot the training expense bills of those, who would qualify for the London Olympics in 2012. The announcement was made by chief minister B S Yeddyurappa at a funcion where the sportspersons, who won medals at the recent Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and Commonwealth Youth Games were felicitated. Air India ups fuel surcharge by up to Rs 200

In line with an up to Rs 200 hike in fuel surcharge on domestic travel by two private carriers, state-run Air India today increased the same across its domestic sectors by a similar amount. Air India has raised fuel surcharge by Rs 100 for travel up to 750 km and Rs 200 for flights over 750 km, an Air India spokesperson told PTI here."The hike was necessitated following the steep spike in aviation fuel prices in the past few months," the spokesperson pointed out.

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India will not increase in diesel prices for now, the oil minister signalled on Wednesday, as the government walks a tightrope between reducing the burden of subsidies and tackling public anger over inflation. Last week, India deferred a ministerial panel meeting to discuss a possible increase in diesel and cooking gas prices. While oil companies in India can set petrol prices, diesel and cooking fuel are fixed by the state.

MANILA - Two British men have been detained in the Philippines and could face long jail sentences for allegedly running a scam offering Filipinos non-existent jobs abroad, legal officials said Wednesday. The two took 1.75 million pesos (40,000 dollars) in fees from 12 Filipinos in exchange for getting them work in Britain but failed to deliver, said Kenneth Dasal, legal officer of the Manila suburb where they are being charged. "They were caught by a police investigator posing as a job-seeker in a ’sting’ operation," Dasal told AFP.

2 more Hero Group staff involved in Citi fraud

New Delhi: Hero Corporate Service on Wednesday said it has identified two more employees who could have colluded with its former associate vice-president Sanjay Gupta and Citibank employees in the Rs 300-crore fraud. "Following an initial internal enquiry, two employees - Ganpat Singh and Gaurav Jain - working in the accounts department have also been identified to have been in possible collusion with Sanjay Gupta and Citibank employees," Hero Corporate Service said in statement. They have been sent on leave with immediate effect by the company, it added.

The global death toll from air crashes rose by 13% to 828 last year, as the airline industry’s improving reputation for safety suffered a "disappointing" year. Dead fetus found in airplane bathroom in Manila

MANILA - Police say a dead fetus has been found in the bathroom of a plane that arrived in the Philippine capital. The gruesome discovery comes months after a woman gave birth on another flight to Manila and dumped the live infant in an airplane trash bag. Aviation police investigator Marcelino Peninoy says a cleaner discovered the remains of the 5- to 6-month-old male fetus Monday on the Etihad Airways aircraft after it arrived from Abu Dhabi.

’VIP’ robbers held in Mongolpuri

NEW DELHI: The police arrested two men in their mid-twenties on Sunday evening for their alleged involvement in at least 24 cases of robbery and snatching over the last 14 months. Cash to the tune of Rs 22 lakh was recovered from the duo along with two luxury cars, a stolen motorcycle, two 120gm gold chains and seven other chains, the police said on Monday. The accused have been identified as Vishal Sharma and Varun Kumar: both are 25 years of age and are residents of Sonepat in Haryana. They were arrested from Mongolpuri by a patrol party. "The two were on a motorcycle and had snatched a chain from a woman. The police team gave chase and nabbed the duo," said DCP (Outer) Chhaya Sharma. According to the police,

Delhi: parents refuse to take back abandoned boy

New Delhi: In Delhi, a six month old infant Chiku was abandoned by his parents after he suffered a brain haemorrhage. Doctors now say that he is medically fit to be taken home. Child rights agencies say serious action will be taken against the parents if they refuse to take him back. For the six month old baby, the nurses at the St Stephen’s Hospital in Delhi are the only family he has as of now. Chiku suffered a brain haemorrhage during the delivery. Soon after, his parents abandoned him saying they can’t look after the child. “When the hospital staff tried to contact them, they were abused by the father and refused to meet doctors and talk about the child,” said Dr Sudhir Joseph, Director, St Stephen’s Hospital.
