Iran declares nuclear ’self-sufficiency’ ahead of talks

TEHRAN: Iran said Sunday it has produced a first batch of uranium yellowcake, the raw material for enrichment, insisting the new step "strengthens" its position in upcoming talks with world powers on its controversial nuclear programme. Atomic chief Ali Akbar Salehi said that having previously been obliged to import yellowcake from abroad, Iran was now "self-sufficient" in the entire nuclear fuel cycle.

PIA jet with 160 on board fired upon in Karachi

A Pakistani passenger jet, carrying around 160 people, was fired upon just as it was about to land in Karachi but the pilot managed to land the aircraft safely, averting a major tragedy. According to officials, a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight from Multan to Karachi, was cruising in to land at the Karachi airport on Saturday night when it was fired upon while passing over the Malir area which is close to the airport.

Police only competent authority to investigate offences: Karnataka Governor

BANGALORE: Karnataka Governor H R Bhardwaj virtually questioned the judicial probe ordered by the Yeddyurappa government into alleged land scams, saying that police was the only competent authority to investigate any offences. "The only forum competent to investigate offences is police. Nobody else has the power. Lokayukta has a police, the government has a police. Wherever there is a crime, it may be investigated by the police," he said while citing a Supreme Court ruling when asked by reporters about the judicial probe.

BHADOHI (UP): Expelled leader Amar Singh today said he was associated with the Samajwadi Party for 14 long years and if he would open his mouth, SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav would land in jail. "If I will open my mouth, a number of people will be in trouble and Mulayam Singh Yadav will land himself behind bars," he told reporters here.

Udupi : Bus commuters in Udupi can heave a sigh of relief from the scorching heat in the days to come as the bus stops especially the Udupi service bus stand will be introduced with air condition facility in a short span of time. Speaking to City Herald, CMC President Kiran Kumar informed that the project has been already assigned to Hareesh Bhardhwaj of Bhardhwaj Enterprises. A proposal has been initiated to build an ATM adjacent to air-conditioned bus top. The entire project has been taken up under BOT (Build Operate and Transfer) basis, he said.

Tu-154 plane commander survives jet accident

The plane commander of the Tupolev Tu-154 jet skidded of the runway at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport during an emergency landing has survived, the head of Dagestan Airlines said on Saturday. The flight №372 departed for the southern Russian city of Makhachkala from Moscow’s Vnukovo airport at 2.07 pm Moscow Time (11.07 GMT). Several minutes after the take-off the crew members reported that all three engines of the plane had failed.
