Udupi: National Highway Santhrasthara Horata Samiti organised a meeting to discuss the future course of action in the wake of the hearing of writ petition filed by the Samiti against the National Highway Authority in High Court scheduled on June 6.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Samiti Coordinator Ramdas Nayak said: “We approached the High Court against the NH authority’s decision to acquire land in excess of the actual requirement. We want the court to restrict NH authority from acquiring the land to the quantum of necessity.

At present, they have formed roads not more than 25 meters wide with the dividers. However, the authorities are now intending to build four meter width divider all along NH-66 as against the usual one to 1.5 meter wide dividers. The Samiti strongly opposes the decision of the NH officials which they have planned with the intention to justify their demand to acquire extra land before the court. They want to convince the court against the excess land acquisition,” he alleged.

Nayak said the authorities claim that wide dividers will prevent accidents. The claim is absolutely illogical and it is only their plan to acquire higher quantum of land. Samiti condemns the absence of uniform rules and discrimination in the land acquisition process from place to place, town to town and state to state, he said.

“We have approached the court citing the reason of violation of fundamental rights of equality before the law and the right to property under Article 14 and Article 15,” informed Nayak.
