Save Swarna River By Dr Gerald Pinto, Kallianpur

Udupi/Kallianpur, Nov 17, 2025: Swarna River is the life line of Kallianpur. It gives water, fish and employment to many. Two years ago government has build river bed and concrete road along the river bed of Swarna River in Kallianpur from Coastal development and MLA fund spending more than a crore. It is a gift to many of the families in the form of a approach road even in rainy season.

Now this road has become a curse to the river as well as surroundings. People come here in large number for morning and evening walk, for picnic and to enjoy the islands and beauty of the River. But unfortunately they bring plastic bottles, eatables in plastic and through them either to the river or leave at the shore. Worst part is people bring bottles of beer and whisky, drink and throw them in the river or keep in the side. Some intelligent people even cover the bottles by news paper and keep them on the riverbed. Most of those are youngsters who come with alcohol bottle.

Local Grama Panchyat has put up one banner saying - No one should drink alcohol and through Bottles - but bottles are thrown in front of the this banner.

As per the rumors around this place which maybe may be true that this place is used to consume drugs. If this is true then this is the high time for the Local body to alert district administration and police. CCTV network must be installed to monitor any illegal activities.

Let us all join our hands to protect Swarna River and let us contribute to society by being vigilant – "To Achieve Swatch Bharat - Drug Free Bharat".
