MALPE, July 13: In a bid to educate the younger generation about agriculture, the Indian Catholic Youth Movement of Thottam St. Ann’s Church and the Young Students Movement of Thottam St. Ann’s Church spent the day by planting saplings in a field at Bailakere.

Rev Fr Denis D’Sa said, "We all know that farmers are the backbone of our country. Today, farmers are moving away from agriculture for many reasons. Due to shortage of labourers and other reasons, the agriculture sector has been badly hit. Young people are less interested in agriculture and they need to be made aware of it”. He said that in order to make the youth of our country focus on agriculture, the youth and women of our church have come together to plant fields and give the fruits to the poor.

Wilma Fernandes, the caretaker of the farm said that in today’s time there is a need to make young people aware of the importance of rice. Such programs have helped in creating awareness among the youth about how we get three time meals today. She said that the main objective is that the youth should understand and enjoy the activities of rice farming, so that more and more young people get involved in such agricultural practices.

Planting saplings in the field has been a special experience for us. When we went straight to the field and planted the hard work of the farmers working in the field, we realized that all of us had happily planted paddy saplings in the field. We know how difficult it is for farmers. But it’s nice to be planted in this way, said ICYM president Rion Martis.

ICYM and YCS convenors Leslie Aroza, Laveena Aroza, Alice Menezes, women members Sunita Martis, Asa Martis, Doreen Fernandes, Joseph Pinto and others were present on the occasion.
