The Legacy of Pope Francis Continues: Pope Robert Francis Prevost, O.S.A.

As the Church embraces a new successor to Peter, the legacy of Pope Francis lives on in the vision and vocation of Pope Robert Francis Prevost, O.S.A.—a humble servant shaped by missionary zeal, pastoral care, and a lifelong commitment to the margins.

Rooted in Faith and Formation
Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Robert Francis Prevost entered the Order of Saint Augustine in 1977 and professed solemn vows in 1981. His academic journey reflects both intellectual depth and spiritual formation, with degrees in mathematics, divinity, and canon law—including a doctorate focused on the governance of religious life. This foundation prepared him for a life of service marked by wisdom and humility.

A Missionary Heart Formed in Peru
Ordained in 1982, he answered the missionary call to Peru, ministering among the poor in Chulucanas. As chancellor of the Territorial Prelature and seminary rector in Trujillo, he developed a pastoral sensitivity shaped by solidarity with the oppressed and a keen awareness of the Church’s prophetic role in society. These years formed his deep commitment to justice, dialogue, and accompaniment—hallmarks of Pope Francis’ pontificate.

Global Augustinian Leadership
His leadership within the Order of Saint Augustine, first as provincial prior in Chicago and later as Prior General (2001–2013), echoed the Church’s broader mission: to be present, responsive, and inclusive. Under his guidance, the Augustinian Order expanded its pastoral and social presence worldwide, especially in Latin America—further aligning with the Church’s preferential option for the poor.

A Bishop Among the People
Appointed Bishop of Chiclayo in 2015 by Pope Francis, he became a shepherd committed to peace and unity during turbulent times in Peru. Within the Peruvian Bishops’ Conference, his steady leadership offered the Church a vital role as a reconciler and moral compass amid political unrest—mirroring the stabilizing influence of Pope Francis on the global stage.

Guiding the Global Church
In 2023, he was entrusted with a key responsibility: Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops. In this role, he helped shape the episcopacy worldwide with discernment, humility, and pastoral vision. Later that year, his elevation to the College of Cardinals affirmed his role as a trusted leader within the universal Church.

Continuity of Vision and Service
Known for his quiet demeanor and profound spirituality, Pope Prevost carries forward the pastoral vision of his predecessor. His understanding that “a bishop is not supposed to be a little prince” resonates deeply with the Church’s renewed emphasis on servant leadership—a vision strongly championed by Pope Francis. His Augustinian roots bring with them a spirituality of community, truth-seeking, and a love for the Church grounded in simplicity.

A New Chapter Begins
As Pope, Robert Francis Prevost inherits not just an office, but a mission—to continue building a Church of mercy, dialogue, and inclusion. His election reflects a continuity of values: closeness to the poor, defense of human dignity, and the call to missionary discipleship. As only the second Augustinian pope since Alexander IV in the 13th century, his election is both historic and hopeful.

In Pope Prevost, the legacy of Pope Francis continues—with fresh strength, deep compassion, and a humble heart open to the world.
