Udupi : Milagres Cathedral Kallianpur of the Udupi Diocese observed All Souls day with devotion and gaiety on Saturday, November 2, 2024. All Souls day is a solemn celebration in the church commemorating all of those who have died and are new in Purgatory being cleansed of their venial sins and the temporal punishments for the mortal sins that they had confessed and being made pure before entering into the presence of God in heaven.

The Solemn Eucharistic mass concelebrated by Rev Fr. Pradeep Cardoza, Asst. parish priest, Rev Mngr Ferdinand Gonsalves, Rector and Vicar General of Udupi diocese and Rev Dr. Jencil Alva, Resident Priest, Milagres Cathedral, Kallianpur.

In his homily, Fr Pradeep Cardoza pointed out the importance of Catholic Church and catholic cemetery which are most sacred places for the catholic faithful people. We not people of death, but people of life, because God is a God of life. And even after our bodies die, we live on in eternal life with God and with all who have gone before us. Those who have gone before us that we remember today have shown us what a life of faith looks like. God wants us to live forever. So today is a day to remember those who have died and to do so by observing and remembering how they showed nus to live. There is something so beautiful in this act of remembrance; in setting aside time to remember and to honor those who have died. Not only that but to believe that we are still connected to one another.

After the mass, all faithful proceeded towards the Cathedral cemetery in large numbers who all the faithful entered the decorated cemetery with coloured lights and gathered near their respective concerned tomb’s. Rev Monsignor conducted the brief prayer services along with the other priests. The cemetery was full of colourful flowers on the tomb’s which rarely be seen in other parish cemeteries. Along with the Monsignor Ferdinand, Fr Pradeep and Fr Jencil Alva sprinkled the Holy water on the all tombs in the cemetery.  

 Milagres Cathedral of Kallianpur has been one of the oldest Churches in undivided DK district. The migrated parishioners who settled in other part of the Udupi district, normally we can see during the special feasts like Annual feast day, All Souls day and other important feasts participating during the mass. Their elders were buried in Milagres parish cemetery, so that, these migrated families usually visits Milagres Cemetery and decorating with flowers and burning the candles on the tombs. Earlier years, the All Souls Day special mass used to observing on November 1 in the evening which most of the other neighboring parish faithful visit Milagres during the evening mass which convenient for them to visit their deceased family members’ tombs to pray.
