Udupi: Our Konkani traditional folk culture is unique and diverse and needs to be preserved and nurtured, said Rev Fr. Denis D’sa, parish priest of Thottam St Ann’s Church.
He was presiding over the inauguration ceremony of the Konkani folk song and instrument training workshop for students under the leadership of Udupi Diocese Youth Catholic Student Organization and St Ann’s Church YCS unit at Thottam church hall on Thursday, October 31.
It is a sad fact that in today’s westernized society, youths are migrating from the village, forgetting our culture and becoming slaves to foreign culture. No matter where we are, we should love our land, language and maintain our culture. A workshop organized to preserve Konkani culture on this auspicious occasion of Diwali is intuitive. Through this, there is a need to be careful to nurture and nurture our culture so that the next generation is aware of it.
The Konkani Folk Song and Instrumental Training Workshop was inaugurated by Konkan Maina award winning singer Meena Rebimbus, wife of Wilfy Rebimbus, inaugurated by filling the wooden Kalsi with rice.
YCS members of Thottam unit performed music using the Konkani folk instrument Gumate. Kathreen Rodrigues, Delton Lobo, Jasmine Jennifer were the resource persons of the training program. In the program, more than 500 young people of the diocese participated in the training workshop.
Youth Director of Udupi Diocese Rev. Stephen Fernandes, YCS Center Secretary Kavitha D’Silva, Thottam Church Parish Pastoral Council Vice President Sunil Fernandes, Thottam YCS President Joshua Fernandes, Secretary Sunita Martis, Prishal D’Mello were present in the program.
Lavina Aroza, Coordinator of Thottam church unit, welcomed the gathering and Leslie Aroza compared the program.
