Kemmannu, Nov 23, 2017: Thonse Padumane Kambla (wet land buffalo race) was held on Sunday, November 19, 2017. This is one of the famous kambla’s of the Kolke summer paddy season in Udupi District. Around 30 Pairs of buffalos took part this year.

The teams have shown their best performance in today’s kambla the organisers have appreciated their efforts for participation while they have escorted their buffaloes from distant villages of Udupi and Kundapur region.  In this year’s competition the discipline was observed by the participating teams and the judges have done their very best standing at the edge of mud pit field that splashed water sky high with the fierce race carried on keeping accuracy with digital clocks.

Thonse Padumane Kambala an event served folklore entertainment to the people of surrounding region.

This year the organisers gave away the follwing prizes:

Hagga Hiriya  1st prize : Rs. 10,000.00
Hagga Hiriya  2nd prize : Rs. 5,000.00
Hagga Kiriya  1st prize : Rs.10,000.00
Hagga Kiriya  2nd prize : Rs.5,000.00

In addition the owners of competing pairs were given Rs.1,000.00 as support prize.

About Thonse Padumane Kambala:

Thonse Padumane Kambala has a history of over a hundred years. It is said that 100 to 200 pairs of buffalos took part in the Kambala in the early 19thcentury. Due to the decline of agriculture in the area, the number has declined and about 30 pairs took part last year.

On Saturday night, as a custom, ‘Bobbrya Kola’ will be held at the ancestral Padumane house. Traditional drum beating by Koragas and them receiving the rice and coconut from the family is a tradition still followed by the family.

People cutting across religion, caste and creed will attend the festivities and celebrate it as a rural festival and once again Padumane Family has extended their warm welcome to all the District Kambala lovers to attend this event.
